What Happened?
Shares of aerospace and defense company BWX (NYSE:BWXT) jumped 7.4% in the morning session after the company announced that its BANR microreactor technology was selected for a transportable nuclear power plant project in Canada.
In a company press release, Prodigy Clean Energy, Pabineau First Nation, and Eel River Bar First Nation selected the BANR microreactor for a proposed facility in Belledune, New Brunswick. The transportable plant is designed to generate up to 50 megawatts of electricity and is targeted for deployment by the early 2030s. What Is The Market Telling Us
BWX’s shares are very volatile and have had 20 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 11 months ago when the stock dropped 9.7% on the news that the broader U.S. stock market declined amid investor caution and a pullback in technology stocks. The main story? Investors are cashing in on a good run and feeling a bit cautious.
BWX is down 19.4% since the beginning of the year, and at $146.53 per share, it is trading 38.5% below its 52-week high of $238.42 from April 2026. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of BWX’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,537.
